The tradition of money was started by the Lichchavi King Mandev, called “Manank”. Later, his successor, Anshu Varma, and Narendra Dev continued using money for the buying and selling of goods.

Timeline of the Nepali Bank Note

The timeline of Nepali banknotes began in वि.सं. २००२, initially issued by the Sadar Muluki Khana (Central Treasury) and signed by the Khajanchee (Treasurer), who was also a high Hindu priest. Since the establishment of the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) in वि.सं. In २०१३, banknotes were signed by the Bank’s Governor.

During this period, paper currency was called “Mohru”. As the NRB did not yet exist, the Treasurer (Khajanchee) signed the notes.

Nepal Rastra Bank Era (Monarchy)
From वि.सं. २०१३ onwards, the Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank signed the notes. Under Kings Mahendra, Birendra, and Gyanendra, the notes featured royal portraits and the legend “Shree 5 ko Sarkar” (His Majesty’s Government).
